The making of Americans by Gertrude Stein

To know that  the American history is complete, we  require only to  bear in mind  our grandparents and  comprehend our parents,  and  then know  who were  are as a person. Setting up of history as a tradition cannot be done by one generation because it has to be passed on so that it can become a trend.

Discussion
The history of the familys progress is clearly discussed in the making of Americans by Gertrude Stein. Family is the basic unit of the society and it   can make or break the society because it is the family that   we are taught morals. It is also here that we are   better socialized for the society. That is why it is important to do things for the society because everyone will benefit. It is important to hear out people to know what they are saying so that you can get to know them better. Repeating the same things to different people is good because same information will have been shared and the message passed from one person to another.

We are not so different from our colleagues in the society because somehow, the history is the same and only very few elements have changed.

On the discussion about characters, tempers are used to demonstrate how   we tend deny that we have some habits which we acquire from our parents. We find that a man drags his father on the ground and all his father manages to say is Stop I did not drag my father beyond this tree. (Stein,      98) .It is ironical that someone dragged his father on the ground and now his son is doing the same to him. The history of human beings becomes complete when they take a look at the family tree in which they descend from. We acquire our temperaments from our family members especially from parents and grandparents. It is important that we know the character traits that run in the family so that we do not lose time fighting them since it is not easy.

The book the making of America it is symbolic of the fact that setting up a tradition in any society began a long time ago and it is after much review that we know that the recurrent behavior has been going on for years so that tradition can be set. These traditions are closely connected with how we are brought and where. New generations descend from the old generation and hence values that we hold are sought from them .The old generation have to teach the new generation what is required of them to hold the traditions. The making of America has been a long journey and it is used to say that the tradition needs to be kept to maintain the status quo and also to put it in the mind of people that it is a journey .Here, we find that the old persons in the society may be weak physically but not mentally because they are very wise. They carry with then a lot of wisdom and we should always lend them our ears so that they can lead us through the right way.

We find that the young people or the youth who are physically strong could be mentally weak and not be in a position to make informed decisions about life in general. It is for this reason that we should talk with those who are elderly because they have been there and they have learnt through their mistakes. In the case of Melanctha, we find that she was very good to her mother, but then she was always like that with people that she saw were in trouble or needed assistance. However, somewhere in the line she stopped caring and her mother too who was ailing did not care for her daughter because she was a difficult child to manage. Melanctha   was thought of not to have a straight mind because of how she wandered and was considered not to put her good grain into good work. Dr Jefferson Campbell, who helped in taking care of Melancthas mother, did not like Melanctha because of the stories that he had about her. Dr.Jefferson is described as someone who is very caring especially to people who are in need of his help  add on that he was very much liked by the society. His family background matters a lot because he was raised in a family that showed him how to care for people and hence he did not have trouble growing up and that is where he got the values from. He was raised in a religious family but he was not quite interested in the religion itself. There is a contradiction, where we find that he likes people to go to church as a way of showing their good side and he defends himself by saying that people have different ways of showing their good side and he shows his by caring for people.

Majorly, the people we become in life are a true reflection of our parents whether good or bad. This also is best displayed in Melancthas case who turned just to be like her father and she is proud of it. She does not see any harm in abusing him because he also abused her.   In addition, it is not right to judge people according to the views of others and instead we should get to know who they really are, so that we can know why they tend to behave the way they do. We find that Dr. Jefferson never thought that Melanctha had a mind until he had a chat with her.

The repetition of events or things in life has to occur whether good or bad so that people can learn. The society has to teach the generations the way of life so that history and traditions can be made and carried forward in the years to come .America has been made by people who lived there initially and those who migrated there just to make a living. As much as history is told, it has to be written down so that the generations to come can have somewhere to refer to. Repeatation is what sets out history because people have to become familiarized with the happenings in the society.

We should be in position to bring out the best in our selves and the others too.
The people who lead in the society always have something going on for them. They have their way with the people in the society. They always say things that make meaning to the society.
We also get to see the talk of the four women who are very strong enough to bear children. Even though they are strong, enough to bear them not all of them are strong enough to lead them through life. Some will bear them and then leave them for the world to take care of them. Some will bear them but will keep on complaining of how they have adopted wrong ways. This illustration depicts the society, because the society is not handling the youth as they should be handled. It is the responsibility of the society to show the young ones the way to go through life early enough other than wait too long in life when they have lost direction only to start blaming them for adopting wayward ways.

Conclusion
The making of America is a wake up call for all societies in the globe to start upholding values that were once held in the societies. With the changing times, traditions have only been kept by very few persons. Times have changed with globalization coming into place and our we need to be adaptive to the changing times so that we fit better in the society. However, these changes should be for the better of the society. We should however take what is good and discard what we do not need. Some people have become so selfish that they only consider what is good to them and not to the whole society.
